I agree, there is a lot of “stuff” out there these days. It can seem overwhelming at first but a few simple guidelines will make it a lot easier and help you feel comfortable with your choice. First, there is no one “best” type of meditation. Many of the techniques are quite similar. In fact, even some of the ones that seem quite different on the surface are actually doing more or less the same thing, just taking different approaches to achieving a similar goal. It’s much less important to worry about exactly which technique you choose than to just start doing it. Over time, as you get deeper into and gain more experience, you will gravitate towards the flavor of meditation that is “best” for you. You might discover that there are techniques that personally work better for you than others but this doesn’t mean the techniques that don’t work for you are bad or worse across the board, only that they might not be the right ones for you. But you needn’t even think about that now. It sounds like you’ve already discovered a few possibilities. You don’t need to keep searching. Pick one that you’ve already see and go learn how to do it. Practice it for awhile, months at least. You can always re-evaluate and switch later. When I first began meditating, I started with one technique taught by an organization. Six months later, that lead me to finding a different set of techniques that were a better fit for me personally. But I still made great progress in those first six months and just about all of the general principles I learned and practiced also applied to the new technique that I learned. That first experience with meditation was a very valuable. I still draw upon it even now in some ways, seventeen years later, even though I’ve moved on to a very different style of meditation.
